Yes, some dental insurance plans provide coverage for orthodontic treatment, including placement, adjusting and removal of braces as well as the cost of the hardware and retainer, X-rays and examinations. But don’t assume that every plan includes coverage for braces. Look closely at the plan benefits, coverages, waiting periods, reimbursement caps, deductibles, limitations and exclusions before enrolling in that plan.
Health insurance plans do not generally cover orthodontic treatment, but you may find a health plan with additional coverage. Some Affordable Care Act marketplace plans offer dental coverage and the marketplace may also offer separate dental plans. Children 18 or younger are eligible for dental insurance on the ACA marketplace since it’s considered an essential health benefit for them in the ACA. You can get dental coverage for a child in a health insurance plan or a separate dental plan on the marketplace. But read the benefit information to see if the plan covers braces and any potential limits and waiting periods.
Dental insurance companies may offer Invisalign coverage, but it varies by individual policies. Invisalign are clear aligners that are an alternative to traditional braces. You should also remember that dental insurance companies with braces coverage don’t typically cover adults for orthodontia care.
